News from the Police – Cash Machine Scams

[Reference: B270 ATM Incidents: 509 of 14/2 & 573 of 15/2]

Police are advising people to be extra vigilant after suspicious devices have been placed on two ATM’s (cash machines).

Between 6.30pm and 6.45pm on Tuesday 14th February, a device was placed on the ATM at a store at Granby Croft, Granby Road, Bakewell. While the person reporting this incident went inside the store to alert staff, the device was removed by the offender/s. Incident no: 509 of 14.2.12.

Just before 6.30pm on Wednesday 15th February, three men were seen acting suspiciously at a bank ATM, The Quadrant, Buxton. One of the men had placed a plastic object over the slot on the machine and then removed it when disturbed by a customer. Description: three men of Eastern European appearance, about 6ft tall, aged 40-50 years, well dressed. They headed towards the alley at the side of Pizza Express. Incident no: 573 of 15.2.12.

Crime prevention advice:

• Members of staff at premises with cash machines should check ATM’s regularly.

• Members of the community should check ATM’s carefully and avoid using them if there is a device on the machine or if anyone is acting suspiciously nearby. These offenders tend to maintain observations on the ATM during this type of incident.

• Report any suspicious activity around ATM’s to the bank or store and call Derbyshire police.

Safer Neighbourhood Team Priorities Update

At our last meeting on Wednesday 11th January at Gamesley Residents Association a panel which included local residents, police, Neighbourhood Watch and representatives from High Peak Borough Council and High Peak Community Housing discussed various issues and chose the following two priorities:

• Raise awareness of the risks and consequences of illegal drug use.
• Target and prevent acquisitive crime across the area, especially burglary, metal thefts and vehicle crime.

We will also continue to target speeding traffic in Charlesworth and Chisworth as a neighbourhood issue.

Over the next three months we will be working with partners to target these areas.

The team would like to thank those residents who attended the meeting and who suggested priorities in our e-forum. If your issue was not selected as a priority an officer from your Safer Neighbourhood policing team will be in touch to discuss your concerns further.

Our next meeting will be held at 1.30pm on Wednesday 25th April at Gamesley Residents Association, Winster Mews.
