Armed Forces Day 2022
Great to attend the raising of the Armed Forces Day flag at Glossop Cenotaph to mark High Peak’s commemorations for Armed Forces Day, which is on Saturday 25th June.
Armed Forces Day aims to provide an opportunity for the public to show their support for our Armed Forces community, past and present.
This includes everyone from cadets to serving troops and veterans, along with their families. As a country we are eternally grateful for their courage, dedication and selfless service, as well as recognising the vitally important work they do to both protect and serve the UK within our borders and beyond.
You’ll see the Armed Forces Day flags flying where ever British service personnel serve be that at home or overseas.

Disappointing news on measures to improve buses across Derbyshire
Following on from the announcement of the National Bus Strategy, Councils across the Country were asked to develop a Bus Service Improvement Plan to improve services in their area.
The Government initially announced that there would be a £3 billion pot to revolutionise bus travel – but this was cut to less than half, with the final pot for bids being £1.2 billion.
70 local authorities across the country bid for funding, but only 31 successfully gained any funding.
This has led the charity Buser Users to raise concerns for those areas that were unsuccessful in their funding bids, believing the impact on local communities could prove disastrous.
For us locally, Derbyshire County Council had bid for £105m but will only receive £47m.
With Derbyshire only receiving less than half what was bid for, it’s difficult to know at the moment which elements of the plan will not go forward and if the reduced amount will affect any existing services.

Melandra Castle Road Closure – Bus Services
Roadworks will see the former Samas Roneo end of Melandra Castle Road closed between 8 am and 6 pm from 5/4/22 to 8/4/22.
As previously flagged, the works are on behalf of T-mobile and are likely to be for installing the 5g mast.
I’m still waiting to hear from DCC Highways to find further information on the works, including if it affects the end of Castleton Crescent.
However, the public transport section has now responded and advised the below details:
“Our Highways team have spoken to the traffic management company (Centurion) who are working on this job and they have advised that buses will be allowed through the road closure (subject to a number of conditions).
There should therefore be no issues for the bus services other than minor delays while the site is made safe for them to pass through.”
This means that services should be running as usual – if there are any changes, I’ll advise as soon as I hear.

The surgery runs from 10 am until 11.30 am in the open air of the Glossop Market Arcade.
As usual, if you can’t attend the surgery on Saturday, please remember that Councillors are not just available at surgeries. You can find more ways to get in touch with me by clicking here and for other local Labour Councillors on our website at www.hplg.info.

If you are unavailable on Saturday, you can get in touch via the details above, or we will be back again, same time, same place on the last Saturday of the month (30th April) for our April Councillors shopper’s surgery.

Broadbottom Road Closure / 341 Diversion
This Saturday and Sunday (26th/27th March) will see the closure of Mottram Road in Broadbottom due to railway embankment works.
Due to the closure, the 341 will be on diversion, and after calling around, Gamesley will run via the A57 through Wolley Bridge before returning to the regular route at Ashworth Lane.
The diversion means that service will not serve Glossop Road (beyond Gamesley), Charlesworth, Long Lane, Market Street in Broadbottom, Mottram Road and Broadbottom Road.
Due to the road closure and the diversionary route, services will likely be delayed on Saturday, both too and from Hyde.
The road is being closed by Network Rail, for a large crane opposite the church to lift materials over the houses onto the railway.
The works are due to be completed by the end of Sunday but may be extended into next week if the works aren’t finished.
You will still be able to access Lymefield Garden Centre from the Charlesworth end.

Commonwealth Day 2022
Monday 14th March sees celebrations across the Commonwealth to celebrate Commonwealth Day 2022.
Each year there is a theme chosen for Commonwealth Day.
This year the theme will centre around the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – ‘Delivering a Common Future‘ – which highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are’ innovating, connecting and transforming’ to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.
This year, the celebrations for Commonwealth Day will also focus on celebrating the Queen’s platinum jubilee, and the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.
Locally, there will be a flag-raising ceremony in Buxton at the Pavilion Gardens at 10am.
This will be followed at 11:45 am for 12 noon by The High Peak’s Mayor and Mayoress attending the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth event at the flag pole in Norfolk Square, Glossop.
The Mayor will read out the Commonwealth affirmation before raising the flag.
