Gamesley Healthy Walking Group

The walking group is built around people with health problems, such as heart disease, where regular mild exercise can be beneficial. It meets at the Community Centre every Thurday at 9.30 am.

The walks start at 9.30 or 10.00am and last for around  4 hours. They are all fairly flat, easy going walks and they go ahead whatever the weather, rain or shine.

They are led by a professional Blue Badge guide, Ray, who makes sure that the walk is safe and provides a little light history of the area being visited. First aid cover is provided within the group and there is a back marker to make sure that no-one is left behind.

The group has a core membership of 20, with around 15 regulars, all over 50. It's a relaxed, open, jolly group which welcomes new members and is particularly looking for younger people capable of helping with the leadership role.

The group has the use of two minibuses and occasionally uses public transport.

No two walks are the same, although they may visit the same area. The group has had 50 different walks in the past year.

Originally funded by EMDA, the group has secured sponsorship for the next 12 months from Health For Living.

The group has a committee and constitution and usually discusses its business informally while waking, although if they get back early they may have a cup of tea in the Community Centre.

Group members have also got together to arrange, at their own expense, visits further afield to places such as the Lake District and Paris.

Lists of future walks can be found in the church window, Jericho Café or the GRA office.

Wheelchair users with an assistant can be accommodated but check first on the nature of the walk.

Fee of £1.50 (from September) per walk.
